21. Explicit Dynamics

The Workbench application provides two Mechanical analysis systems that enable explicit solutions:

  • The Explicit Dynamics system is a LS-DYNA-integrated provision of the Autodyn FE (Lagrange) and multiple-material Euler solvers plus Euler-Lagrange Coupling (providing FSI). The Autodyn solver is equivalent to the Explicit Dynamics Solver.

  • The LS-DYNA and LS-DYNA Restart systems are Mechanical-integrated provisions of the LS-DYNA solver with extensive support through native Mechanical objects or keyword management.

The enhancements for these systems for Release 2024 R2 are described below.

Explicit Dynamics

For the Explicit Dynamics system, note the following enhancements for Release 2024 R2:

  • Intel MPI Upgrade. On Windows and Linux, Intel MPI support has been upgraded to version 2021.11.

LS-DYNA

For LS-DYNA systems, note the following enhancements for Release 2024 R2:

  • Active Unit System. LS-DYNA can now use the active unit system of Mechanical as the solving unit system. If the Solver Units property of the Solver Controls in the Analysis Settings is set to Active System, the solver unit system used for the input file generation will be the closest consistent unit system to the active unit system.

  • Split Input File. LS-DYNA enables the input file to be split when the Split Input File option of the analysis Settings is activated. It will split the input.k file into 5 additional files (control.k, database.k, mesh.k, contact.k, component.k), allowing the input file to be read more easily.

  • Coupled Structural Thermal Electromagnetic Analysis. The LS-DYNA system in Mechanical lets you perform an analysis using electromagnetic Voltage and Current boundary conditions to evaluate the resistive heating effects in the model. Electromagnetic material properties can be added to materials.

  • ALE Enhancements. Fluid structure interaction data is now available to the Binout Tracker. By default, the LS-DYNA system now ensures ALE elements are evenly distributed to all processors.

  • LS-DYNA Acoustics Analysis. LS-DYNA now provides for a Multi Load Steps Acoustic simulation using the BEM technology, and allowing coupling with Harmonic Response.

  • Additional Explicit Materials. Explicit materials such as Air (Atmospheric) and most explosive materials are now available for the LS-DYNA system in Mechanical.

  • Additional Material Properties. Ideal Gas EOS and Explosive JWL material properties are now available for the LS-DYNA system in Mechanical.
