68.8. Recommendations

While performing the simulation of hydrostatic extrusion, consider the following:

  • Due to very large elastic and plastic deformation exhibited in this type of problem, a hyperelastic-plastic billet material is recommended.

  • You can experiment with material models other than Neo-Hookean and bilinear isotropic hardening; however, some parameters may require adjustments to reach convergence for a given fluid-pressure loading.

  • Use fillet on the die corners to facilitate material flow.

  • Element deformation in the cylinder portion of the billet is expected to be more in the axial direction; therefore, the element size should be larger along the radial direction than the axial direction.

  • Set KEYOPT(2) = 3 on CONTA172 (Lagrange and penalty method) to maintain low penetration during deformation.
