MI Materials Gateway

Granta MI Materials Gateway is a plug-in for CAD, CAE, and PLM software applications that enables you to find materials data and apply it across your organization, creating a consistent, authoritative link to the data in your Granta MI system.

In CAD and PLM applications, you can assign materials to components in a part model, part geometry, or product structure:In CAE applications that support it, you can assign materials directly to individual components within a simulation project or model:
In other CAE applications, you can import materials to a simulation model, project, or materials library:

Each material that you assign or import includes a permanent reference to the source record in the Granta MI database. This enables materials data to be shared across your organization, updated (for version-controlled databases), and consistently tracked as a 'digital thread' throughout your engineering processes.

Depending on the CAD, CAE, or PLM application you are using, and the optional features that have been enabled on your Granta MI system, your MI Materials Gateway may have additional capabilities.

Additional Capability Available in Gateways for Description
Assign processes, surface treatments, and colors

Creo Parametric

NX

Teamcenter with NX

Windchill

Find and assign compatible processes, surface treatments, or colors that are linked to materials in your database.

Note: This is an optional feature, and may not be enabled on your system.
Alternate assignments

Creo Parametric

NX

Teamcenter with NX

Windchill

Assign alternate materials (optionally with processes, surface treatments, and/or colors, if these are enabled) to the material library on a part, in addition to a primary material assignment on the part or body.

Note: This is an optional feature, and may not be enabled on your system.
'Where Used' searching

Teamcenter with NX

Windchill

Search your PLM system for a Granta MI material, process, surface treatment, or color, and find all parts that it is assigned to.
Analysis and reporting

Creo Parametric

NX

Teamcenter with NX

Windchill

View reports and an interactive dashboard to analyze material assignments and calculate weight roll-ups.

If Sustainability or Restricted Substances analysis is enabled on your system, you can view the BoM in MI BoM Analyzer for more extensive product analysis and reporting - for example, using Sustainability, Product Compliance, or EU REACH reports.

You can also export the BoM as a Bill of Materials (BoM) file for analysis in MI BoM Analyzer - for example, if you want to give the BoM to someone else to analyze.

CAE material models and simulation models

Abaqus/CAE

ANSA

Ansys Electronics Desktop

Ansys Workbench

Creo Parametric

HyperMesh

NX

  • For CAE simulation, you can assign or import a specific model of the material's properties (a CAE material model).
Note: In Creo and NX, this is an optional feature, and may not be enabled on your system.
  • In Ansys Workbench and HyperMesh, you might also be able to assign or import simulation models that provide additional, specialized data for a base material - for example, for use in a particular simulation context.
Note: This is an optional feature, and may not be enabled on your system.
Transfer CAD or PLM assignments to CAE applications
From:
  • Creo Parametric
  • NX
  • Teamcenter with NX
  • Windchill
To:
  • Abaqus/CAE
  • Ansys Electronics Desktop
  • Ansys Workbench
  • HyperMesh
  • In Creo Parametric, NX, Teamcenter with NX, and Windchill, you can export material assignments as a Bill of Materials (BoM) file and then use it to import the materials to Abaqus/CAE, Ansys Electronics Desktop, or Ansys Workbench (on Windows only).
  • In Ansys Workbench (on both Windows and Linux), you can import simulation data for Granta MI materials that have been assigned to a CAD part geometry, when using the Workbench Associative Interface (from Creo Parametric or NX) or JT file transfer (from NX)
  • In HyperMesh, when transferring a CAD part geometry from NX to HyperMesh as a JT file, you can view the Granta MI materials that have been assigned to the part geometry, and update the assignments with additional data for simulation.
