Finding where an assignment is used

In MI Materials Gateway for Teamcenter or Windchill, you can run a 'Where Used' query for any Granta MI material to find all parts in your PLM system that the material is assigned to.

If Granta MI process, surface treatment, or color assignments are supported on your system, then you can run a 'Where Used' search on these in the same way.

The query results are shown as a list of parts, with details of their bodies and assignments. This can be exported as a BoM file, or analyzed using dashboards and reports.

Note: If your system supports alternate assignments, the 'Where Used query' will find both primary and alternate assignments.

If your Granta MI database is version-controlled, you can choose whether to search for all versions of the record, or the specific version that you see in MI Materials Gateway. By default, the search includes all versions. You can change this option on the Settings page (for more details, see Viewing and updating your settings).

Note: When you run a 'Where Used' query in Teamcenter, the results may include parts and assignments in projects that you don't have access permissions for. (This is standard Teamcenter search behavior.)
Run a 'Where Used' query for a material
  1. Find the material you want to search for using Browse, Search, or Favorites, or anywhere it appears in MI Materials Gateway.
  2. Right-click the material name and select Find where used.
Note: If your Granta MI database is version-controlled, a material shown on the Assignments page may not be the most up-to-date version. If the Include all versions of a record in 'Where Used' results setting is turned off, the 'Where Used' query will be specific to the material version that you clicked on.

The query results are displayed on the Assignments panel as a list of parts, with a root component called WhereUsedResults. Note that for each part found by the search, all of its bodies (with their assignments) are shown in the query results.

You can filter the components shown in the list, and edit or update assignments, in the same way as when you are viewing an assembly. For details, see View and manage your assignments.

Note: In an integrated Creo/Windchill environment, assignments can be made to the same part in both Creo and Windchill. Depending on your system configuration, either the Creo or Windchill assignment will take precedence, and will be shown on the Assignments page in the Windchill Gateway.

For material assignments, a 'Where Used' query will find all parts to which the material has been assigned in either system. In the query results, the Material column shows the assignment that takes precedence, if the part has assignments from both systems. (Note that this may be a different material from the one you searched for.)

Your results may include additional columns that have been configured to show data that is relevant to your workflow or Granta MI system. For information about any columns not listed here, see your Granta MI data administrator.
