Many Editor panels contain a   feature in the upper-left corner of one or more sub-panels that allows expanding or collapsing of the subpanels. This allows you to hide detail of subpanels when you are not using them. The default state of the expand/collapse feature (that is, whether always expanded or always collapsed) can be configured in User Preferences (see User Preferences ).
