20.2. The Shock Wave Identification Parameter (SWIP) Field Variable for Adaption

When using the pressure-based solver, a Shock Wave Identification Parameter field variable is available in the Derivatives... category. This parameter can be useful for aerodynamic simulations, as you can determine the location of shock waves through postprocessing and/or use it to create cell registers for mesh adaption. This parameter is represented by in the following equation:

(20–1)

where

(20–2)

and

is the speed of sound for the fluid
is the gradient of fluid pressure
is the fluid velocity
is the exponential filter constant
is the linear noise reduction constant

The Shock Wave Identification Parameter field variable is only available when all of the following are true:

  • beta features are enabled (as described in Introduction)

  • the pressure-based solver is selected

  • the energy equation is enabled

  • the case is initialized

When the Shock Wave Identification Parameter field variable is available, you can also use the following field variables:

  • Shock Wave Identification Parameter (Limited)

This represents a version of in which numerical limiting is imposed on the pressure gradient in Equation 20–2 for overshoots.

  • Shock Wave Identification Parameter (Non-Limited)

By default this is identical to Shock Wave Identification Parameter.
