1. New Features and Enhancements in Ansys EnSight

The following list highlights the enhancements and changes to EnSight in 2024 R2. In addition, we have several major enhancements that have reached Beta state and can be utilized under the guidelines of a beta feature.

  • Native Rocky Reader

EnSight now has a direct reader for the native Ansys Rocky file format. EnSight can read both the geometry, Particles and SPH Particles, starting from the *.rocky file. Grouping, naming of parts and variables attempts to follows the structure of Rocky as much as possible. To utilize shaped particles, the Rocky solver version must be 2024 R2 or greater. In coupled solver situations, you can utilize EnSight to visualize the multiple solution in a single view.

For more details, see, Rocky Reader in the Ansys EnSight User Manual.

  • Shaped Particle Support

Previously, discrete element solutions could only be rendered as sphere shapes (scaled, but only that shape). In 2024 R2, EnSight can now handle shapes to be used when rendering discrete element solutions. In the Node Representation dialog, you can utilize given shapes, with orientation, scale, and location. This works natively for the Rocky reader, but can also be utilized through other readers (for example, EnSight Case Gold).

  • Lighting Improvements

More lighting and visual aspects of EnSight have been updated. Shadows are now shown in the OpenGL rendering. The Quad (Area) light now has handles in the viewport for interactive placement. Some ground plane defaults in interactive control interface have been changed. The control of the environment map rotation user interaction/control. has been improved In addition, the environment map rotation is now relative to the model space (rather than screen space).

  • DVS Improvements

Development and expansion continues for the DVS data transfer mechanism. Enhancements in 2024 R2 include single writer/multiple reader cache. Memory usage and read performance for datasets with same coordinates/connectivity/variables has been improved. Start and read connections when running in in-situ modes has been improved. Handling of dynamic part lists in DVS to EnSight has been improved with a reinit call sequence.

  •  Qt Library Update

EnSight continues to update both Qt and PyQt Libraries to improve security vulnerabilities and maintain consistency across other Ansys applications.

  •  VTK Library Update

Update to the latest VTK Library to handle newer flavors of the file format.

  • Parent and Dependent Children in Calculator Operations

A change in the calculator logic has been introduced, when the provided parts for a calculator function include parts containing parents and their dependent children. There was a potential ambiguity as to whether that calculation should done explicitly in the parts, or whether the dependent children should inherit their values (consistent with other operations). In 2024 R2, the dependant children are automatically removed when their parents are part of the selection for the calculator function. This means the values on the dependent children will inherit the variable value from their parent.

  • Autodyn Reader Improvements

We have updated the Autodyn Legacy Reader to be able to handle recent Autodyn datasets.

Note:  The reader labeled as Autodyn reader did not receive the updates. Use the Autodyn Legacy Reader.
