14.2. Problem Description

The problem examines a 3D geometry model of a Nelson-Vaugh rotor. The model consists of a flexible rotor with one rigid disk supported by two orthotropic bearings. Modeling details for the original model are available in Reference [1].

Modal, Campbell diagram, and unbalance response analyses are performed on the 2D axisymmetric model represented in the figure below. The effect of gyroscopic moment on the rotating structure dynamics is observed in each analysis.

To validate the accuracy of the results obtained with the 2D axisymmetric model, the same analyses were performed with the corresponding 3D solid model. The results are then used as a benchmark for the 2D axisymmetric model results.
