Mesh-independent initial state is an alternate method that applies initial-state data on a cloud of data points independent of the mesh. If the current mesh does not produce quality results, you can modify it while still preserving the original initial-state (.ist) data file.
The initial-state data file for the mesh-independent method is much smaller compared the element-integration-point or node-based file (both of which are dependent on the size of the mesh), resulting in considerable disk space and memory savings.
