Introduction to the Short Fiber Composites Tutorials
The real-world problems presented in these tutorials showcase the power of Ansys workflow for the structural simulation of Short Fiber Composites. This workflow combines Material Designer for the material characterization, the Injection Molding Data system in Workbench that imports injection molding simulation results, and Mechanical for the setup up of the finite element model. Working step by step through a tutorial is an effective way to learn about Ansys Short Fiber Composites simulation capabilities so you can apply them to projects of your own.
The results shown for each problem may differ slightly from those that you obtain, depending on the computer hardware and operating system platform used.
Obtaining the Input Files
You can download all the necessary input files for each project using the links below under Tutorial Summaries. You can also download the solved project file for each project if you wish. These files tend to be large, so they are provided via a separate download link. The tutorials will prompt you when and how to use each file.
To download the zipped file set for a given problem:
Click the link in the table below.
Save the .zip file to a convenient location on your computer and extract the contents.
If you need additional guidance on how to open project files in Workbench, see Opening an Existing Project or File in the Workbench User's Guide.
Tutorial Summaries
Below you will find links to the tutorials (click the title), a summary of each tutorial, and links to download the project files.

Tutorial 1: Structural Analysis of a Short Fiber Reinforced Part ![]() |
In this tutorial you will analyze a static load deforming the top casing of an electronic component. This involves importing a fiber orientation tensor from an injection molding simulation, mapping it onto a part in Ansys Mechanical, and combining it with a material computed in Material Designer. |
|
Tutorial 2: Calibration and Validation of the Elasto-Plastic Properties of a Short Fiber Composite ![]() ![]() |
This tutorial demonstrates how to use experimental data to calibrate and validate a short fiber composite material model. After the validation, the homogenized material will be exported and used to simulate the structural behavior of a flange made of the validated composite. Coupon (Dog Bone): Flange: |

Tutorial 3: Structural and Modal Analysis of a Short Fiber Reinforced Car Mirror ![]() |
In this tutorial, you will see how fiber orientation and fiber volume fraction, resulting from an injection process, influence the total deformation and the vibration modes of a car mirror. Then an overmolded laminate is introduced to showcase the workflow for combining short fiber reinforced plastic and continuous fiber laminates. |

Tutorial 4: Accounting for Weld Lines in the Simulation of Injection Molded Parts ![]() |
This tutorial demonstrates how to import weld lines results from an injection molding simulation into Mechanical. The example problem is the structural simulation of a laptop screen frame manufactured with a double-gated injection molding process. Also, some general considerations about modeling of the mechanical behavior of weld lines in injection-molded short fiber composites are offered. |

Tutorial 5: Drop Test Scenario for a Mobile Phone ![]() |
This tutorial shows you how to use LS-DYNA in Ansys Workbench to simulate the drop impact of a mobile phone with components made of short fiber composites. As in the case of the implicit Mechanical APDL solver, this requires calibrating a material card in Material Designer, importing and mapping fiber orientation data from an injection molding simulation, and setting up the model in Ansys Mechanical. |
