Calculating a Signal Envelope

This procedure shows how to calculate the envelope. The envelope is a curve which describes the evolution of a signal feature, mainly the overall amplitude evolution. The envelope usually refers to the attack, the sustain and the decay in a sound.

To Calculate a Signal Envelope:

  1. Open a temporal signal.
  2. Select the signal.
  3. Click Calculation > Envelope Computation to display the calculated envelope in new window.
Tip: Add the calculated envelope to a new block of the original signal to observe the two signals at the same time.

The signal envelope is calculated.

Figure 1. The temporal signal before calculating the envelope is displayed in blue. The calculated envelope is displayed in red.
