15.1.1. Classification of Thermal Entities

Thermal entities define the boundary conditions for thermal input and heat transfer.

Thermal input

These entities are used to apply a heat source to a surface, point, or whole body.

Figure 15.1: List of thermal inputs

TypeDescription
Temperature Use to set the temperature on a body or surface.
Heat Flow Use to set the heat flow on a surface. This defines the rate of heat energy transfer through a given surface per unit time.
Heat Flux Use to set the heat flow per unit area on a surface.
Heat Generation Use to set the heat flow per unit volume on a body.

Other thermal entities

These entities are used to apply heat loss to a surface or heat transfer between contact entities.

TypeDescription
Convection Use to set the parameters of heat convection.
Thermal Contact Use to set the thermal conductivity between two contacted surfaces.
