The option of merging joined unstructured nodes will merge the (multiple) joined nodes that reside at the same physical location in the model into one single unstructured node.

Since trajectory contact does not allow the use of joined unstructured nodes in the contact, the merge option can be used to remove joins from the model. Bonded connections are recommended over node to node joins for unstructured models.
