Local Fidelity

Using Local on the Simulation tab, you can manually set lower or higher result resolutions. A smaller value will capture more geometric details, leading to higher fidelity results. All user specified local fidelity values are treated as "soft" size controls during mesh generation, which means that the mesher can decide to override any user specified local fidelity to improve the overall quality of the mesh.

Local Fidelity Considerations

  • In Explore, for structural and solid thermal simulations, local fidelity can only be assigned to bodies and for fluid flow simulations it can only be assigned to faces.
  • In Refine, you can apply local fidelity to bodies, faces, and edges for all physics types.
  • Discovery might not apply the exact fidelity size you select. Increasing the fidelity slider setting might not change your mesh refinement. To view the applied local fidelity, review the mesh in Refine. In Explore, display the mesh or use the Size Preview tool to view the actual fidelity applied to a body. You can also use the Resolution plot to determine if the refinement is sufficient to capture all the salient geometric features.
  • If you apply a local fidelity to one side of an interface, then the same fidelity sizing will be applied to the second side of the interface.
  • If you specify different local fidelities at each interface of a fluid-solid, fluid-fluid, or solid-solid interface, the lower value will be applied to both sides of the interface.
  • In Explore, when solving on a very fine mesh, systems using a 4GB graphics card could run out of memory. You can try decreasing the global or local refinement, or both. Additionally, make sure you only have one session of Discovery running, or simplify your model.
