Geometry Transfer

The Geometry Transfer group in the Prepare tab contains tools for transferring geometry to Ansys applications. The following information can be transferred: named selections, materials and driving dimensions. Transfer tools give you the ability to transfer the geometry model to flagship products, with parametric updates. So, rather than only a one-way export, the model is parametrically updated between Discovery and the flagship products.

Note: Workbench supports a smart update associativity transfer, which gives you the ability to link your Discovery model to Mechanical. Analyses, connections and physics conditions are transferred, which are then updated between Discovery and Mechanical. You can specify what data is exported in the File > Workbench tab of the Settings panel. For more information on the smart update associativity transfer, see Discovery.

When a geometry is transferred from Discovery to Workbench, a connection is established. If Workbench is closed, Discovery is also closed out. Workbench prompts you to save your work before closing.

Note: Discovery will attempt to transfer all objects in the model. However, it is up to the downstream applications to accept them.

The Geometry Transfer ribbon group contains the following tools:

  • Update Parameters to update parameter values in the Workbench parameter set.
  • Workbench to start Ansys Workbench with a geometry system.
  • Mechanical to start Ansys Mechanical with the geometry imported.
  • Fluent options in the dropdown to start Ansys Fluent. Select the appropriate options in the Fluent Launcher.
    • Select Watertight Geometry Workflow to transfer the geometry to Ansys Fluent with the Watertight Geometry workflow selected. See the Ansys Fluent User's Guide for more information about Using the Watertight Geometry Workflow.
    • Select Custom New Workflow to transfer the geometry to Ansys Fluent. See the Ansys Fluent User's Guide for more information about Customizing Workflows.
    • Select Export PMDB to save Ansys Part Manager Files (*.pmdb).
  • AEDT options in the dropdown to start either HFSS, Maxwell, Q3D Extractor, Icepak or Mechanical transfers.
Note: There are differences in material properties between geometry and simulation transfer to HFSS as only material names are imported, while material properties are not imported.
