Motor-CAD

Motor-CAD is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) package for the design of electric motors.

Electromagnetic models are currently available for the following machine types:

Thermal models are currently available for the following machine types:

Lab modules are currently available for the following machine types:

Mechanical modules are currently available for the following machine types:

The particular module is selected using the Motor Type pull down menu. Each motor type uses the same data-file structure and user interface, simplifying the transfer of data from one module to another.

Motor-CAD has been developed to give the motor designer a fast method of analysing design changes on the performance of the machine. In doing so, not only can the optimum design solution be quickly identified, but it helps fully understand the design variables (geometry, materials, etc) that have the most influence on the machine performance and cooling. The latest user-interface techniques are used so that the package is easy to use and the user is never more than a mouse click away from the information required.  Motor-CAD has been written so that the user need not be an expert in electromagnetics or heat transfer - all the difficult parameters are calculated automatically by Motor-CAD.

In this manual most of the details are valid for the electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical models in Motor-CAD. However there are some cases where the interface or methods are only used for one of the models and are highlighted in the heading sections as such.

Electromagnetic Model:

See Electromagnetic modeling of Electric Motors for more details on the finite element and analytical methods used to calculate the electromagnetic performance of the motor.

Thermal Model:

See Thermal modeling of Electric Motors for more details of the 3-dimensional lumped circuit model (Schematic) used to calculate the steady-state and transient thermal characteristics of the motor.

Lab Models:

Motor-CAD Lab is a combined electromagnetic and thermal modeling toolbox, it enables engineers to undertake a number of important calculations which facilitate the modeling and optimisation of a motor design over its entire operating range.

Mechanical Models:

The Motor-CAD FEA solver is used to calculate the rotor stresses due to centrifugal forces. Motor-CAD also calculates the Electromagnetic Noise, Vibration and Harshness (E-NVH) response on the machine Stator.

User Interface:

Motor-CAD has an easy to navigate and intuitive main User Interface.

Online Help:

On-line help is available at any point in Motor-CAD - just press the F1 key or select Help -> Manual from the Pull Down Menu.

Data Files:

Motor-CAD data is stored in a *.mot datafile.

Web Demonstration:

There are several web demos available on the Motor Design Ltd YouTube channel .
