Specifying transportation for your product

You can specify how parts are transported during the manufacturing phase and how the finished product is delivered to its final destination. This information will be used to calculate the environmental impacts of the Transport phase.

Environmental data for a range of Transport modes is available. Any number of transport stages can be assigned to:

Processes
Specify transportation of the raw or unprocessed material to the primary processing location. If secondary processes are assigned to the material, transport stages can also be assigned to each of these processes. Environmental impact is calculated based on the mass of the material before the process is applied.
Parts
Specify transportation from the point of manufacture of the part to its point of assembly. Environmental impact is calculated based on the mass of the finished part, after all processes have been applied.
BoM (final product)
Specify transportation of the completed product after all manufacturing is finished. This typically includes distribution to the point of sale, end user, or storage facility.

The Sustainability analysis calculates the environmental impact of transportation by part, and by transport category - covering both manufacturing and distribution.

  • To specify manufacturing transportation, assign a mode of Transport to a Part or Process.
Note: Ensure that processes appear in the BoM in the correct order, as material mass may be different after processes are applied.
  • To specify distribution transportation, assign a mode of Transport to the BoM level.
Note: The order in which the transport stages are listed at the BoM level does not affect the analysis calculations.

To specify a transport stage:
  1. Assign a mode of Transport by right-clicking the Part, Process, or BoM and selecting Add > Transport.
  2. In the Quantity column, specify the distance for this transport stage.
  3. In the Unit of Measure column, select or enter the distance unit.
  4. Double-click in the Name column and edit the name of the Transport mode to give the transport stage a unique name.
Important: Each Transport stage must have a unique name, otherwise the report will fail to run.
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to specify another transport stage.
