Contact Sizing Control

Contact Sizing creates elements of similar size on bodies from the faces of a face-to-face or face-to-edge contact region. This control generates spheres of influence internally with automatic determination of radius and size if Resolution is selected for Type. You may want to apply a method control on sweepable bodies to force the elements to be tetrahedron where the sweeper is not providing enough local sizing near your contact region. Your swept mesh may be quite dense if the contact size is small on the source and target faces of the body. You may also see very little effect on swept bodies in the case where a contact size is applied to a very small region of a large source face.

Use contact sizing together with Sizing for faces/edges and Refinement to create a high-quality local mesh that transitions smoothly from the fine contact area to the coarser global mesh in the bulk of your model.

There are many ways to access Contact Sizing. Any of the following will work:

  • Right-click Mesh on the Tree Outline and click Insert > Contact Sizing.

  • Click Mesh on the Tree Outline and click Contact Sizing in the Mesh Context tab of the Ribbon.

  • Right-click a body, face, edge, or vertex, and select Insert > Contact Sizing.

  • Drag a Contact Region or Contacts folder from Connections on the Tree Outline to Mesh.

  • Right-click a Contact Region on the Tree Outline and click Create > Contact Sizing.

The Contact Sizing Details window has the following options:

Scope

  • Contact Region: You must define which contact pair the sizing control applies to by selecting the relevant contact region from the drop-down menu in the contact sizing details panel. Alternatively, you can define the contact pair by scoping directly to a face or body.

Definition

  • Suppressed: Allows you to suppress the selected control. The default value is No. When Suppressed is set to Yes, the Active field displays No, indicating that the mesh control is deactivated and ignored by the meshing algorithm.

  • Type: Select how to control the element size. Options are:

    • Resolution: Specify a relative scaling factor that influences the mesh size in the contact region. The default value is 4. Typical values vary between 0 - 7 where 0 is the coarsest mesh (faster but may be less accurate) and 7 is the finest (more accurate, but longer solution time). You can parametrize Resolution.

    • Element Size: Directly specify a positive value (decimals are allowed) for Element Size (default). Smaller values generate more divisions. The default value is 0 mm. When you specify a value different from the global Element Size, it overrides the global value. You can parametrize Element Size.

Note:
  • You can select two bodies in the Geometry window and use the Go To > Contact Sizing Common to Selected Bodies option to identify any contact sizing controls that exist between the two bodies. This feature provides an easy way for you to delete the common controls.

  • Because Contact Sizing objects cannot be duplicated, they cannot be used as template objects for the Object Generator.
