31.2. Problem Description

In this example, we examine a rectangular plate with a notch at its center. Varying pressure loads are applied to the top edge of the plate creating tensile and compressive loads that change with time. Leveraging planar symmetry, the model to be analyzed can be reduced to just one fourth of the plate, reducing both model size and computational efficiency. Symmetry conditions are applied to the edges of the rectangular plate touching the notch. A 2-D plane stress analysis under varying pressure load using 2-D four-node structural elements (PLANE182) is performed to observe the ratcheting effect on results obtained using the Chaboche kinematic hardening material model.
