9.3.2. Decoupled Detailed Chemistry Model Theory

A decoupled detailed chemistry pollutant calculation starts from a converged steady-state combustion solution. This original solution can be obtained with the Species Transport, Non-Premixed, Partially-Premixed, or PDF Transport combustion models. After you have imported a detailed chemical mechanism through the CHEMKIN import facility, you will identify the pollutant species. The non-pollutant species in the detailed chemical mechanism that are not already in the original combustion solution are determined by a chemical equilibrium calculation at the fixed temperature of the original solution. Note that species that are not identified as pollutants and do not participate in the reactions amongst the pollutant species are eliminated. Similarly, reactions in the imported CHEMKIN mechanism that do not include any pollutant species are also eliminated.

The sequence of steps that occurs after the pollutant mechanism has been imported and the pollutant species selected is as follows:

  1. A mixture material called pollutant-mixture is created and set as the default.

  2. Non-pollutant, non-original species in the imported mechanism are set to their chemical equilibrium values at the cell temperature.

  3. The Species Transport combustion model is enabled with the Laminar sub-model and the stiff chemistry solver.

  4. The solution to all transport equations, except the selected pollutant species, is disabled.
