When solving unstable problems, mesh modifications using nonlinear mesh adaptivity methods may be insufficient to stabilize the structure and convergence difficulties may persist. To ensure that the structure is stable even during a nonlinear mesh adaptivity analysis, issue STABILIZE. The combination of suitable mesh modifications with nonlinear stabilization helps to achieve convergence and leads to reasonable results.
Upon remeshing after issuing STABILIZE, the damping factors for the old mesh are mapped onto the new mesh in a suitable manner and used for subsequent stabilization force calculations. The stabilization energy quantity is also mapped to ensure that no jumps are present after remeshing.
In some cases, when the energy-based
stabilization-control method is used, recalculating the damping factors
(STABILIZE with RECALCDAMP
= 1) after
remeshing may enable the solution to converge faster. The damping factors are then
recalculated in the substep following the remeshing substep.
