Creating a BoM

Although the BoM Store is populated with the available BoMs that are present in the structure of data in your database, you can also create a Bill of Materials manually in BoM Analyzer in two ways.

  • You can start with a single root component, and then add parts and assemblies.
  • You can copy an existing BoM, or a sub-assembly or part, to create a new BoM. This is useful if you want to duplicate a BoM and then make changes for comparison.
Important: When you create a BoM manually in MI BoM Analyzer, it exists only in your web browser session. You can save your BoM as an XML file, but you cannot store that BoM in the BoM Store.
When you create a new BoM, you must give it a Product number and a BoM name. You can edit these at any time.
  • The Product number is typically the root component's identifier, and may contain letters, numbers, and other characters. This is displayed in the Item column of the BoM display.
  • The BoM name is displayed in the BoM tab header.
To create a BoM:
  1. Click New.
Tip: To copy an assembly or part into a new BoM, right-click and select Copy to new BoM. You can also duplicate the entire BoM (including its BoM name), by right-clicking in the BoM header.
  2. Enter a Product number for the root component.
  3. Enter a BoM name for the Bill of Materials.
Tip: To change the BoM name, right-click in the BoM header tab, select Rename BoM, and enter a new name for the BoM.
  4. To add a part to the BoM, right-click the root component and select New component. Then, edit the identifier in the Item column, and specify a Name, Quantity, and Unit of Measure.
For more information, see Adding parts or assemblies to the BoM.
  5. Repeat the previous step to add assemblies and parts as required.
  6. To save the BoM, click Save.

The BoM is saved as an XML file.

To assign materials and other data, or make changes to the BoM, see Editing a BoM.
