Importing materials into Ansys Workbench

Use MI Materials Gateway to import materials from your Granta MI database to Ansys Workbench for use in simulation. You can import materials to an Engineering Data component, where they can be shared with other systems.

  1. Find materials to import. You can search for materials in your Granta MI database, or use a material from your favorites.
You can also import materials data for CAD assignments that have been provided as a Bill of Materials (BoM) file. See Importing CAD assignments from a Granta BoM file.
  2. Select the materials that you want to import, then either double-click your selection, or right-click and select Import as new card.
  3. If there is data missing for any of the materials, you are prompted to review your import.
    1. To see details of the missing data, click the arrow at the left of the material name.
    2. If you prefer not to import a material that has missing data, use the check boxes on the far left to remove it from your selection.
  4. When you are happy with the list of materials for import, click Import.

The materials are imported to the Engineering Data component of your Granta MI component system.

All the materials that have been imported are displayed in the Imported material cards panel.
  • To see more information about a material, right-click it and select View datasheet.
  • To delete an imported material, right-click it and select Delete. This deletes the material from your model.
If a material is marked as missing , this means that it is no longer available in your Granta MI database.  Where possible, its name is shown to help you find a suitable replacement.
If a material is marked as 'CAD data only' , this means that it does not contain CAE simulation data. (Typically, this is because the material card has been created automatically when importing a CAD model geometry to Ansys Workbench via the Workbench Associative Interface.)
Tip: To import CAE simulation data to all material cards, click Update all material cards with default simulation data at the top right of the Imported material cards panel.
