This section provides information on enabling GPU rendering for Microsoft Remote Desktop. It details the process of connecting to the remote desktop, accessing the Local Group Policy Editor, and configuring multiple settings under the RemoteFX options.
Large software packages used in Remote Desktop environments frequently necessitate GPU rendering. However, Remote Desktop does not support this feature by default, so it must be enabled manually. Failing to do so can result in various errors related to the initialization of DirectX or OpenGL GPU drivers when attempting to launch rendering programs.
To enable the option, do the following:
Use your credentials to connect to the remote desktop.
Scroll to the bottom of the window, click the magnifying glass (search) icon, and then type into the field:
gpedit.mscPress .
The Local Group Policy Editor window appears.
In the navigation window on the left, select the following path: Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Remote Session Environment.
Enable both User hardware graphics adapters for all Remote Desktop Services sessions and Configure compression from RemoteFX data.
Open the RemoteFX for Windows Server folder.
Ensure Configure RemoteFX, Optimize visual experience when using RemoteFX, and Optimize visual experience for Remote Desktop Services sessions are set to Enabled.
