Mass Flow-Weighted Average for Monitors

Discovery generally uses area-weighted averaging for all results monitors. However, you can use mass flow-weighted averaging instead for the following results variables:
  • Temperature
  • Temperature uniformity
  • Total pressure
  • Pressure drop

Under Simulation Options, on the Simulation tab, click Additional Fluid Flow Options to see the options in the expanded panel. Click Mass flow-weighted average for monitors if you want monitors calculated using mass flow-weighted averaging.

You can select inlets, outlets, fluid-fluid interfaces, or planes crossing the flow region. Mass flow-weighted averaging is also available for surface bodies only in Explore.

An area-weighted average is calculated by integrating the scalar variable times the area divided by the total area over the region.

A mass flow-weighted average is calculated by integrating the scalar variable times mass flow divided by total mass flow over the region.

Note:
  • Mass flow-weighted average for monitors is on by default for new simulations. This setting might be off in simulations created in previous versions of Discovery.
  • If a mass flow-weighted average monitor is created using a location that includes both a solid and a fluid surface, the monitor value will ignore the solid region and return the mass flow-weighted average for the fluid region only.
