Importing a Discovery Live Design

You can import a Discovery Live design using File > Open. The tables below list unsupported features and concerns when a Discovery Live design is imported into Discovery.

Simulation Types

The following specific simulation types will not transfer to Discovery.

  • Electrical simulations

  • Thermal-Electric-Structural Multiphysics simulations (however, thermal and structural conditions will transfer)

  • Topology Optimization

Physics Conditions

The following physics conditions are not supported in Discovery.

  • Time Varying Physics Conditions

  • Electrical Physics Conditions (current, current density and voltage)

In addition, inlets and outlets have the following limitations:
  • For flow inlets on multiple faces:

    • If the flow inlet directions on the multiple faces are parallel, Discovery will warn that some of those inlets might act as a velocity outlet. You are advised to create an inlet on each face instead.

    • If the flow inlet directions are perpendicular (or not parallel), Discovery will only support a flow inlet on one face, and only one of the faces of the inlet will transfer.

  • Velocity, Mass Flow and Pressure will be transferred as an outlet if away from the body.

  • If a specific temperature is not set for the inlet in a flow velocity condition, then the initial condition temperature will be the inlet temperature defined in Discovery.

  • Discovery Live supports convection thermal conditions applied to inlets or outlets, but Discovery does not. Therefore, if you import an inlet with a convection thermal condition, the only condition that will be applied is the convection temperature, not the convection coefficient.

Monitors

The following monitors are not supported:

  • Statistical Operator Types

  • Histogram, Standard Deviation, Integral

  • Discrete Operator Types

  • Gradient, Laplacian, Divergence, Curl, Unity

  • Total Volume

  • Topology Optimization Result Volume

Joints

Joint names are slightly different in Discovery. However, when the joints transfer, they maintain the same degrees of freedom.

Discovery Live Discovery
Fixed Support Fixed Support
Hinge Support Hinge Support
Cylindrical Support Sliding Support
Planar Support Sliding Support
Ball Support Ball Support
Frictionless Support (limited support in Live) Planar Support

Additional Features

The following features are not supported in Discovery:

  • Parameter Studies

  • Fidelity Slider Values

Additional Concerns

The following are additional concerns when importing a Discovery Live file into Discovery:

  • Since tensile yield strength and tensile ultimate strength are not set for materials in Discovery Live, they transfer with a value of 0. Therefore the minimum factor of safety will typically be 0 unless you specify values for them.

  • Transient end time will not transfer.
