The GIL constructs a bounding box around the independent data of the supporting points. By default, query points outside of this bounding box are projected to the bounding box before interpolation. In the case of Linear Multivariate interpolation, GIL also provides the option to project query points to the convex hull of the independent data of the supporting points.
