Autosave

The autosave tool automatically saves the current file at the specified intervals defined in the OpticStudio Preferences. The autosave files are located in the Autosave folder, which can be found in your <Zemax Data folder>.

The autosave will use the copy of the .ZMX file saved by the Undo setting.  If the Undo setting is set to 'None,' then both the .ZMX and .ZDA files will be saved at the specified time interval. The autosave will not save while any tool is actively running (i.e. in the middle of an optimization run) and will instead save one time interval after the tool has completed running.

If OpticStudio unexpectedly closes, the next time it is opened, a dialog box will appear informing the user that files were autosaved. This dialog box can be disabled in the OpticStudio Preferences > General.  This box will give you the option to open the file, delete the file, open the recovered file folder location, or close the dialog and proceed to open the file selected when OpticStudio was launched.  Unless the user specifically deletes a file, it will remain in the Recovered folder indefinitely.
