MI Restricted Substances and MI Sustainability

This release includes new features and data updates for MI Restricted Substances and MI Sustainability.

New features

Cross-database BoM analysis
You can now analyze BoMs containing records stored in other Granta MI databases by creating cross-database links to equivalent records in the Restricted Substances and Sustainability database. Linked records replace your original records when opened in BoM Analyzer, enabling you to analyze imported BoMs without adding custom records to the Restricted Substances and Sustainability database.
New BoM item type
When a BoM is analyzed using cross-database links, the original in-house assignment appears in BoM Analyzer and the BoM report alongside the linked record, identified with the new item type 'External'.

Database updates for Restricted Substances

Update highlights include:
  • One new legislation record added - EU Cosmetic Products Regulation (Annex II Prohibited Substances and Annex III Restricted Substances)

  • IAEG Aerospace and Defence Declarable Substances List (AD-DSL) version 9 update
Specifications
Status, Specification revision date, and Specification revision letter data has been reviewed and updated for all SAE AMS® and MIL specifications, where applicable
Substance data
  • EU SVHC Prioritization Score - scores added for proposed SVHCs, and SVHC criterion data populated. Date of inclusion in Candidate List populated for Candidate List substances
  • EU REACH Registration status, and data on EU Wide Dispersive Uses (WDU) and High Production Volume (HPV) substances reviewed and updated
  • SMILES data added for all remaining substance records, where available, which were not populated in previous release
  • Bisphenol A (BPA) and its derivatives discrete level has been added to the Substance Categories discrete Attribute
The current total of Restricted Substances in the database is 27,321.
Coatings

This latest release includes the addition of 24 new coatings records, covering metal flake-filled paints, primers, corrosion inhibitors, conversion treatments, and electro (anodize, electroplate) or electroless plate coatings. These records contain compositional, typical uses, processing and performance, and important information about compliance and restricted substances. They increase the database coverage with some of the latest coatings relevant to the aerospace industry.

Database updates for Sustainability

Legislations and Lists
Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU 2025/40) added, including a summary of the regulation, list of substances impacted, and link to relevant files
Products and Parts
  • 57 new Standard Parts added to support evaluation of the environmental impact of purchased parts when primary data from suppliers is not available
  • Comments about environmental indicators Attribute updated to provide additional information about part production and references used to estimate the environmental impacts. Two new Attributes, Included activities start and Included activities end, have also been added
  • Attribute Part mass and Meta-Attribute Per unit included and populated for all Standard Parts with an estimated Mass (kg) per part, area, or length
  • Attributes ISIC and CPC included and populated for all Standard Parts based on classification systems used by the data provider

Database updates for both products

  • This release sees the addition of nine new full records, enhancing our offering of high-performance polymers used in the automotive and electronics industries, and advanced nickel-iron alloys used in controlled expansion applications. The records include identification, mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, sustainability, and restricted substances Attributes. The new materials are:
    • PA9T (general purpose)
    • PA9T (15% glass fiber)
    • PA9T (30% glass fiber)
    • PA9T (30% glass fiber, flame retarded)
    • PA9T (35% glass fiber)
    • PA9T (40% glass fiber)
    • PA9T (45% glass fiber)
    • PA9T (50% glass fiber)
    • Nickel-iron alloy, alloy 42 (sealing alloy)
  • Food Contact data within MaterialUniverse has been comprehensively reviewed and updated to align with current legislation. Each record has been either validated or revised with the most recent data
  • Materials prices have had a full review, resulting in updated prices for 2894 materials. Notable price changes are seen in materials containing gold, silver, tungsten, cobalt, nickel, and lithium. PAI, PBT, NBR, PP, Epoxy, and PPS prices have also changed, with the rest of the constituent families minimally changing by 1-2%
  • Price volatility and Price variation Attributes in the Elements table have been reviewed and updated to the following definitions:
    • Variation = Price (max) - Price (min) / Price (geomean)
    • Volatility = STDEV over last 5 years
    • This has carried through to the Critical Material risk indicators in MaterialUniverse.
  • Other database updates include updating the EU REACH Candidate List indicator and SIN List indicator Attributes to reflect the status of the lists, improvements to the material classification attributes, and improvements to the heat of combustion data
