Creating an Object Selection
Create an object selection when you want to group multiple objects for convenient selection and processing. Objects in a selection can still be treated as separate objects. The same object can be included in several different selections.
To create an object selection:
- If you are selecting in the Modeler window, make sure that the modeler is in select object mode by pressing the O shortcut key. This is not necessary for selecting in the History Tree.
- Select the objects you want to include in the selection.
- Click Modeler > Named Selection > Create > Object Selection.
The object selection is created with the default name ObjectSelectionn. It appears in the History Tree under Named Selection. Selecting an object selection displays the properties of that selection in the docked Properties window. One of the properties is a list of objects contained in the selection.
To rename the object selection, edit its Name in the docked Properties window. Object selections are sorted in alphanumeric order.
There is an automatically created selection called AllObjects included in the Named Selection branch. Click on this entity to select all objects in the model.
For Maxwell 3D, the object selection will be treated as one volume that can be used for a boundary, excitation, mesh, parameter, or Motion setup. Note the following:
- Assigning or editing materials on named selections is not supported.
- Assignment on named selections is not supported for the following:
- Eddy effect
- Core loss calculations
- Harmonic force calculations
- Permeability Link
- Set Object Temperature/Deformation
- The following excitations are not allowed to be assigned to a named selection that contains multiple objects:
- Band (for motion setup)
- Currents
- Voltages (Magnetic designs)
- Coil terminals
- Current density
- Current density terminals
- Voltage drops
The object selection is
If a selection contains mixed types of geometry, for example, volume and sheet objects, the volume calculation only uses the geometry of the highest dimension in plots or integral, and so forth.
- Line objects in the selection do not affect where the fields are saved. If all objects in the selection are lines, fields will be saved on all objects.
- To postprocess on line objects when saving fields on an object/face selection, include both the line and its containing object/face in the selection.
Example: To plot the E-field on a surface formed by the intersection of the XY-plane and several objects, first define a selection of these objects. Then, when plotting fields, select the object selection name from the Geometry window of the Fields Calculator. Fields will be plotted only at the intersection of the plane and the objects in the selection.
