AC Magnetic (Eddy Current) Solver

The AC Magnetic (Eddy Current) field simulator computes electromagnetic fields in the frequency domain in 2D or 3D. The sources of the electromagnetic field can be

The quantity for which the AC magnetic field simulator solves is the magnetic field, H. The magnetic flux density, B, is automatically calculated from the H-field.

Optionally, the AC Magnetic solver can incorporate displacement currents into the solution even in non-conducting domains, thereby allowing the solution of the full system of Maxwell's equations and the recovery of the electric field E everywhere including the non-conducting regions. Derived quantities such as forces, torques, energy, losses, and impedances may be calculated from these basic field quantities at the solution frequencies.

In 2D, only the A-Phi formulation is available, so even though the 2D AC Magnetic (Eddy Current) option is not labeled so, it uses the A-Phi formulation.

Solution types available for the Maxwell 2d Solver with the AC Magnetic option selected

However, in 3D, both T-Omega and A-Phi formulations are available and can be selected from the Solver Type window:

Solution types available for the Maxwell 3D solver, which includes the AC Magnetic Eddy Current T-Omega and A-Phi formulations

Note: The AC Magnetic 3D A-Phi solver is only accessible if it has been activated from Tools > Options > General Options > Desktop Configuration > Beta Options window. Select the Maxwell AC Magnetic A-Phi Solution feature.

For 3D AC Magnetic T-Omega solutions, user can include DC fields in the calculation.
