Horizontal Series Ports

HFSS and HFSS 3D Layout support single horizontal ports to replace dual ports for tuning ports that contain only a single micro strip or strip line elements between the ports.  Tuning ports used to connect resonator separation capacitors and coupled micro strip or strip line elements continue require dual ports.

HFSS 3D Layout may employ Horizontal Tuning Ports to reduce the number of ports being used in the EM simulation and to reduce the complexity of the tuning port schematic.  Horizontal ports have some additional deembedding requirements that are accounted for in the schematic design variables, namely KHdbed.  KHdbed it not set up by default for tuning, but the designer may at his or her discretion adjust the value up or down to maximize deembedding accuracy, if desired or needed.  Horizontal Series Ports may be deselected in the export panel, if desired and shown in Figure 1, in which case the Automated Port Tuning schematic will implement all tuning ports as the standard dual ports.

The effect of the Horizontal Series Ports is to place one side of the series element on the single horizontal series ports and a ground on the other side.  The horizontal port is set up in HFSS 3D Layout to simulate in the same manner as though a dual port pair were used to simulate the element.  This may be seen in Figure 3 below.
