Planar EM Setup: General Tab

Click the General tab of the Planar EM Setup window to access the following settings.

The layout of the window changes depending on what Mesh Selection is chosen: Fixed Mesh, Standard Adaptive, or Advanced Adaptive. Some of the following options are shared by more than one Mesh Selection. The following options are available.

Fixed Mesh

• SetupName: name of the setup; must be unique.
• Enabled: if not enabled, this setup cannot be analyzed and are not included in a general “Analyze” of all setups.
• Solution Frequency: the wavelength is used to control the mesh refinement; typically the mesh size should be conformable to the wavelength.
• Fixed Mesh: a single mesh is created using the solution frequency and refinement parameters; no attempt is made to adapt the mesh based on the field solution.

Use edge mesh: narrow rectangles are inserted along the edges of the model. The edge mesh efficiently captures electromagnetic effects close to the model edges, resulting in faster solution times and/or higher accuracy.

Edge mesh length ratio:The ratio of the length to the width of the rectangles. After refinement, the width of the rectangles are nominally equal to this ratio x length. The ratio value should be between 0.02 and 0.2 to prevent extremely narrow rectangles and extremely wide triangles.

Absolute edge length:The absolute width of the edge rectangles.

• Use Defaults: the Target defaults depend on the Order of Basis function selections (e.g., for Driven solutions and a First Order basis function, the default target is 0.3333; HFSS refines the mesh until most element lengths are approximately one-third wavelength).

Standard Adaptive

• Maximum Number of Passes:The maximum number of passes to adapt at that frequency.
• Maximum Magnitude Delta S:The maximum amount of change chosen in the S parameters between adaptive passes. It is a stopping criterion for the adaptive solution. If the entries of the S matrix change from one iteration to the next by an amount that is less than Max Delta S, the adaptive solution evaluates output variables and may move on to the next frequency. Otherwise, the solution process continues until the convergence criteria are reached (e.g., if you specify 0.01 as the Max Delta S, HFSS continues to refine the mesh until the number of requested passes is completed or until the S parameters change by less than 0.01 from one iteration to the next).
• Save currents for last adaptive pass: Allows plotting of currents data in the reporter for the last adaptive simulation.

Advanced Adaptive

• Frequency: The adaptive frequency for refinement
• Max Passes:The maximum number of mesh refinement cycles that you want HFSS to perform. This value is a stopping criterion for the adaptive solution; if the maximum number of passes has been completed, the adaptive analysis stops. If the maximum number of passes has not been completed, the adaptive analysis continue until the convergence criteria are reached.
• Output Var.: A button containing 'Add...' to add output variables to the refinement criteria for that frequency or 'Edit...' to edit the output variables for that refinement criteria. Selecting this option brings up the Advanced Mesh Convergence window or displays the error message 'You must have at least one output variable defined' if you have no output variables defined in your design. You may receive the error 'You must have at least one output variable defined that returns a single real value (as opposed to complex, etc)'.

Output Variable: Displays the name of the output Variable

Include: Displays a check box indicating whether or not to include the value of this output variable in the mesh convergence calculations.

Max Delta: The maximum amount of change chosen in the output variable between adaptive passes. It is a stopping criterion for the adaptive solution. If the output variable changes from one iteration to the next by an amount that is less than Max Delta, the adaptive solution

• AddFrequency: To add a new frequency to the table click AddFrequency under the table
• RemoveFrequency: To remove a selected frequency on the table, click RemoveFrequency under the table.
