Best Practices for Resources

To help manage your costs, Ansys recommends the following best practices for resources:

  • Stop resources when they are not in use

Stopped resources incur costs at a much lower rate, typically only for the attached storage.

  • Delete resources that will not be used again

  • Use shutdown timers

    • Enable and set shutdown timers for virtual desktops and HPC clusters. A shutdown timer automatically stops a resource after a set period of inactivity or low usage. If timers are not set, a running resource will remain in the Running state even if it is not being used (until someone stops it).

    • The timer trigger is configurable. For example, it can be defined by CPU usage, or by a count of signed-in users.

    • For more information, see Setting Shutdown Timers for a Virtual Desktop and Setting a Shutdown Timer for an HPC Cluster in the Administration Guide.

  • Use resource tags

    • Recommended: Create a resource tag such as 'managedBy' to identify the person who is responsible for a resource.

    • Resource creators much specify a value for the tag when creating a resource.

    • For more information, see Tags in the Administration Guide.
